Kiambu: Man sentenced to life imprisonment robbery

Kiambu Town: A 28-year- old man has been jailed for life by a Kiambu Court for robbery with violence.

Robert Ng’ang’a Mungai was found guilty of committing the offence by the Kiambu senior resident magistrate Justus Kituku.

He was charged jointly with others not in court for robbing Monica Wangui Mbuthia of assorted electronic items and cash 8,000 shillings on February 3, 2016 at Kanunga village Kiambu County.

The court heard that Wangui arrived at her home at 2am at night and while knocking her house door, so that her children could open the door, a gang of five men appeared and attacked her.

The prosecution told the court that the gang was armed with crude weapons and a torch and one of them hit her on the head and she fell down.

They took her hand bag containing 8,000 shillings, mobile phone and ATM cards.

The prosecution further told the court that the accused forced Wangui into her house after her daughter opened the door.

The accused ordered the children to put off all the lights before the other gang entered into the house.

The gang took away assorted electrical items before they fled.

Thereafter Wangui and her two daughters raised the alarm attracting response from her neighbours.

The neighbours called the police from the nearby Kanunga police patrol base who rushed to the scene.

“The accused was identified by her daughters aged 15 years and 12 years respectively who noticed him before he ordered them to put off the lights” the prosecution told the court.

The daughters gave the police information prompting the arrest of the accused the following day.

“The daughters singled out the accused from scores of suspects held at the police station” the prosecution added.

Magistrate Kituku while sentencing the accused said although he was a first offender, there is sufficient proof to convict him.

He was however given 14 days to appeal.
